The vertical sections where a flat roof turns up against a wall, a parapet or a kerb are called upstands, and they take more thermal movement and more mechanical stress than any flat area. They also have to be terminated at the top, either into a mortar joint, under a flashing, or behind a trim. Water sitting against a poorly formed upstand will get behind it.
