Dark grey stone slate on older Bury roofs
The council appraisal of the town centre conservation area, designated in 1978, records roofs traditionally of dark grey stone slate or Welsh slate over buff sandstone walls. Stone slate behaves nothing like the clay and concrete tile we lift in Salford. It is much heavier, laid in diminishing courses with the biggest slabs at the eaves, and often bedded in lime rather than nailed dry. Finding matching slabs for a patch is the slow part, so we salvage off the roof itself wherever the courses allow.
Lime mortar, sandstone stacks and cast iron gutters
Sand and cement pointing on a sandstone stack is the commonest thing we are called to undo. It is harder than the stone, so it traps moisture and the face of the block spalls off instead. We repoint in a lime mix that lets the wall breathe, renew the flaunching, and cut lead soakers where somebody has smeared a cement fillet. Many frontages here still keep original cast iron guttering, and it is worth saving. A cracked joint can be cleaned and rebedded cheaper than a plastic run that never sits right on a stone eaves course.

Interwar semis at Walmersley and the newer estates
Out along Walmersley Road and through Limefield the housing turns to interwar and post-war semis with clay or early concrete tile. The first failure is nearly always mortar: bedded ridge tiles crack their full length, then the verge goes and end tiles lift in a gale. On the newer estates towards Elton and Redvales the tiles are usually sound and the trouble is the extension flat roof, old felt laid to no fall and holding water in the middle. We recover those in EPDM or GRP rather than patch them again.
